Start “Clean” in 2022 By Breaking Bad Dental Habits

Did your dental routine fall a bit short over the holidays? If so, you’re not alone. Our team understands that dental habits can become a bit lax from time to time. Hopefully, you have pledged to adopt some healthier habits in 2022, including improving your dental health!  Whether you’re a self-professed teeth grinder or lazy brusher, the Dr. E Cosmetic and Family Dentistry team wants to remind you that it’s never too late to break bad dental habits.

Are you ready to get your dental health on track in 2022 and beyond? Here are some tips to help you kick the worst dental habits and achieve a healthy, beautiful smile…

Overbrushing. Is it possible to brush your teeth too much?  Believe it or not, it is! Overbrushing, or brushing too aggressively, can wear down tooth enamel and leave your teeth more susceptible to cavities and tooth decay. Instead, always use a soft-bristled tooth brush and massage the teeth rather than firmly brushing them.

Nail Biting. While it’s a nervous habit that is hard to break, understand that nail biting can wreak dental havoc. Not only can it chip the teeth over time, but it can irritate sensitive mouth tissue and even result in jaw disfunction. To break this common habit, try stress relievers such as meditation or yoga. You can also chew sugarless gum to help keep your mouth busy.

Too Much Sugar. One of the most common of the bad dental habits…Your sweet tooth can be your smile’s downfall! Sugary foods and drinks place you at greater risk for damaging tooth enamel and increase the likelihood of developing cavities and tooth decay. Instead, opt for healthy food and snacks such as apples, carrots, nuts and cheese. If you must succumb to a sweet craving, keep a glass of water handy to wash away the sugar and food debris.

Teeth Grinding. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is often attributed to stress or poor sleep habits. But excessive teeth grinding can result in chipped teeth and severe jaw pain. Try stress reduction techniques before bedtime or ask your dentist about wearing a mouth guard at night to protect your smile.

Using Teeth Instead of Tools. In the moment, it may seem easier to use your teeth to rip open a package or open something stubborn, but using your teeth instead of tools is never a good idea! This harmful habit can result in tooth chipping and cracking and other mouth injuries. Instead, take a moment to grab scissors, a knife, or another appropriate tool in order to keep your smile safe and your teeth intact.

Smoking/Tobacco. Any type of tobacco is detrimental to your oral health and your overall health. When it comes to your smile, be aware that tobacco stains the teeth, leads to tooth decay, contributes to gum and periodontal diseases, and increases the risk of tooth loss. Studies also show that smoking and chewing tobacco can lead to cancer of the mouth, tongue and lips. Your dentist, along with your primary doctor, can offer tips and suggestions to help you quit this very unhealthy habit. It’s never too late to take action!
