The Great Fluoride Debate

Fluoride has been a hot topic of debate in the dental community and among health experts for decades. In fact, the great fluoride debate dates back roughly 70 years! What’s all the fluoride fuss about? Learn more below…

Why say YES to fluoride?

Those who are “pro” fluoride support research that shows that it can help prevent tooth decay and reduce cavities in children and adults. Fluoride is thought to help strengthen tooth enamel, thereby making it more resistant to decay. It is also believed that fluoride can rebuild teeth while reversing signs of early tooth decay. When used in toothpaste, for example, the fluoride works as a topical agent on the surface of the teeth. Its contact with teeth strengthens and rebuilds them. When added to water or mouthwash, fluoride mixes with saliva to “bathe” the teeth in strengthening agents.

Why NOT use fluoride?

Those opposed to the use of fluoride share concerns that it can potentially pose risks for small children, especially those under two-years-old. Little ones who may not yet have mastered the art of the “swish and spit” may swallow too much fluoride, leading to a condition known as dental fluorosis. This results in discoloration and streaking of the teeth and potentially even the breaking down of tooth enamel. Adults are also at risk of fluorosis resulting from excessive fluoride intake. Because it is difficult to regulate how much fluoride is consumed through tooth brushing and water consumption, some feel it is better to be safe and eliminate it altogether! In fact, many European countries completely ban fluoride from their water.
