From Twigs to Technology
A Look at How Far Dental Care Has Come
When you think about your toothbrush, dental cleanings, or even whitening treatments, it’s easy to take modern dentistry for granted. But did you know that caring for teeth goes back thousands of years — long before there were dentists, drills, or dental floss? This month, as we celebrate gratitude, we’re taking a look back at the fascinating history to look at how far dental care has come.
Ancient Beginnings: The First Tooth Tools
The earliest evidence of dental care dates back to ancient civilizations like Egypt, China, and Mesopotamia. People used twigs (called chew sticks) to clean their teeth and crushed shells or pumice stones as a type of toothpaste. Ancient Egyptians were among the first to create a form of dental prosthetics, using gold wire to stabilize loose teeth — talk about a golden smile!
The Middle Ages: Barber-Surgeons and Early Dentistry
By the Middle Ages, dentistry was often performed by barber-surgeons — yes, the same people who cut hair and performed small surgeries. Tooth extractions were common treatments for pain, and though primitive by today’s standards, these early practitioners helped shape the foundation for modern dental care.
The 18th & 19th Centuries: Dentistry Becomes a Profession
As science and medicine advanced, so did dentistry. The 1700s marked the birth of dentistry as a recognized profession, with the invention of the first dental drill and porcelain dentures. By the 1800s, toothpaste began to look more like what we use today, and the toothbrush became a household staple.
The 20th Century: Modern Dentistry Takes Shape
Fast forward to the 20th century — a time of incredible innovation. X-rays gave dentists the ability to see beneath the surface, fluoride was introduced to strengthen enamel (later leading to alternatives like hydroxyapatite for natural remineralization), and professional cleanings became routine. Cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, and implant technology began transforming smiles like never before.
