Tooth Tales from Around the World
A Trip Around the Globe
When it comes to losing a tooth, kids everywhere have their own special traditions — and some are downright magical! Here in the U.S., most children know the Tooth Fairy will make a nighttime visit, exchanging a lost tooth for a shiny coin or even a few dollars. But did you know that other cultures have their own fascinating “tooth tales”? Let’s take a trip around the globe to see how the world celebrates one of childhood’s biggest milestones — losing a tooth!
Spain & Latin America: The Tooth Mouse 🐭
In Spain, Mexico, and many Latin American countries, the Tooth Fairy has a furry little counterpart — Ratoncito Pérez or El Ratón de los Dientes. This tiny tooth-collecting mouse sneaks under pillows to swap teeth for coins or small gifts. The beloved story of Ratoncito Pérez dates back to the 19th century and remains a cherished childhood tradition.
Japan: Up and Down for Good Luck 🎋
In Japan, when a child loses a tooth, it’s tossed — but not under a pillow! If it’s a lower tooth, it’s thrown up onto the roof. If it’s an upper tooth, it’s tossed down toward the ground. The idea? Encourage the new tooth to grow straight in the direction it’s thrown. Some families even make a wish for strong, healthy adult teeth!
France: Meet “La Petite Souris” 🇫🇷
The French version of the Tooth Fairy is also a mouse — La Petite Souris (“the little mouse”) — who trades lost teeth for coins. Sound familiar? The story may have inspired similar traditions throughout Europe and beyond!
Turkey: Planting for the Future 🌱
In Turkey, when a child loses a tooth, parents might bury it in a meaningful place — perhaps near a school or a family home — hoping it brings good fortune and success. The location symbolizes the parents’ wishes for their child’s bright future.
South Africa: Hidden for a Surprise 🪙
South African children tuck their lost teeth into slippers instead of under pillows. While they sleep, a kind mouse (again!) exchanges the tooth for a small coin or treat. Seems like the Tooth Fairy could use some help keeping up with all these mice around the world!
Different Traditions, Same Bright Smiles
While the stories and rituals differ from place to place, the excitement of losing a tooth — and growing up just a little bit more — is something kids everywhere can relate to.
