Oral health is the key to overall health! That’s why during the entire month of June, the American Dental Association and dentists nationwide strive to remind us about the importance of oral hygiene.
Did you know that an estimated 1 out of 4 adults have untreated tooth decay and 1 in 10 adults have severe gum disease? The good news is that taking proper care of your smile (with the help of your dentist, of course!) is the key to prevention. During Oral Health Month, the Dr. E Cosmetic and Family Dentistry team supports the ADA in spreading awareness about the significance of oral hygiene. We are also sharing simple steps everyone can take to achieve a healthy, beautiful smile.

Your smile is responsible for far more than a good first impression. It also represents the gateway to your body’s overall health and wellness. Following a good daily oral hygiene routine is the key to preventing common dental issues such as cavities, tooth decay, gum disease… and dreaded bad breath! If oral hygiene is neglected, gum disease and infection can lead to serious health issues such as heart disease, stroke and even certain cancers. Plus, a healthy, sparkling smile boosts self-esteem and sends a message to those around you that you are approachable, trusting and confident. Remember, it’s never too early or late to prioritize your dental health — taking care of your smile is a lifelong commitment–not just during oral health month!
Daily Oral hygiene tips
Good oral health starts and continues with the right oral hygiene routine. The following basic, yet effective, oral hygiene tips offer a way to help you establish or maintain a routine that will keep your smile looking beautiful while boosting your overall health.
Brush and floss every day. Consistency is the key to every good oral hygiene routine. Brush and floss (gently) for at least two minutes at least twice daily.
Invest in your routine. Set your smile up for success with the right dental products. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. Flossers and mouthwash also help round out your oral hygiene routine. Not a fan of basic flossing? Try a Waterpik. With so many innovative dental products on the market today designed with your comfort and convenience in mind there’s absolutely no excuse for slacking off from your oral hygiene routine.
Avoid sugar. Foods and drinks high in sugar wreak havoc on your smile, your waistline and your heart. Instead of sodas and hard candies, opt for water, fruits and crunchy veggies like broccoli and carrots.
Stay away from tobacco. Smoking leads to tooth decay, gum recession and increases the risk of lung and mouth cancers. Plus, no one is a fan of discolored teeth and smoker’s breath. Just say no!
Safeguard your smile. It’s important to protect your pearly whites, especially if you play sports or habitually grind your teeth at night. In these cases, a mouthguard is a simple and effective solution. Also, remember that your teeth are not intended to be tools to open or tear things — that’s what scissors are for!
Be a good role model. Model good oral hygiene for young children to help instill lifelong habits that will preserve their smile and self confidence.
Visit your dentist. Schedule cleanings with your dentist at least twice annually — or more frequently if you have dental concerns that require monitoring.
