Professionally applied dental sealants are beneficial to many of Dr. Janet Euzarraga’s patients! Why? Think of them as a protective shield over the enamel of the tooth that wards off cavities and tooth decay.
How Sealants Work
A thin, protective, plastic coating is applied that bonds into the natural fissures and grooves of the teeth, acting to block decay. Sealants are generally placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth and they are particularly effective in preventing cavities on the first and second molars. They are painted on as liquid and quickly harden to form a shield over each tooth, typically lasting several years before a reapplication is needed. The best part is that the treatment is painless and usually takes less than an hour from start to finish!
Why Sealants are Necessary
Our teeth naturally have tiny grooves and fissures where food and bacteria get easily trapped. Therefore, even those who are most diligent at brushing and flossing are not immune to tooth decay! The bristles of the toothbrush simply can’t reach these areas and therefore tooth decay is likely to develop. Once the thin covering that’s applied with the sealant bonds to the crevices of the teeth, it serves as a barrier to block out plaque and food in order to prevent decay and cavities.
When Should I get a Sealant?
Patients young and old can benefit from sealants. Children can begin with sealants when their first molars come in, usually between the ages of 5-7 years old . Additional sealants can be applied at around 11-14 years of age, when the second molars begin to erupt. Adults may also benefit from sealants on the biting surfaces of their molars and/or premolars that have no previous decay. Dr. E checks the conditions of any existing sealants during regular dental visits so you will know if it is time for a reapplication!
Let’s recap! Sealants are durable and ward off tooth decay. Having a sealant applied by Dr. E is quick and painless! Both adults and children can benefit from sealants. What are you waiting for? Seal the deal on a healthy smile by visiting Dr. E and her caring team for your dental needs!
